Artist's Statement: REM.nants
I explore the nature of being human as understood through the unconscious, more specifically my unconscious. I create artwork derived from the feelings and images that I retain after dreaming. This exploration includes how I associate and assimilate emotions, biology on both a cellular and physical level, and the generation and control of dark fears and fantasies such as evolving into life forms we do not always recognize. The dreams are dark, dangerous, and filled with apprehension, and yet contain elements of light, joy, and peace. As with fairytales and fables, dreams have a whimsical otherworldliness while simultaneously conveying underlying darkness and lessons to learn. The sensory impressions left by the dream can change how we relate to and view the world. Through the combination of stylized objects, whimsy and darkness, my installations and sculptures become physical representations of the connections and associations that my unconscious makes in trying to understand the world around me. I create the elements of a tale where the viewer through their experiences, memories, and fears becomes the storyteller.
